Distance learning option earns 89% approval rating
Background
A European manufacturer of wings for the commercial aerospace industry required large numbers of lower level engineering staff to contribute positively as project team members, to an existing six sigma programme addressing unacceptably high levels of production process variation.
Due to the geographically diverse nature of the assembly operation and continued demands on working time, getting everyone together in one place at the same time for a series of learning sessions was difficult to say the least.
Action
- Existing teaching material was converted to intuitive learning modules with work through examples
- Tips and self assessment were built into the material
- Material was located on a remote closed server with authorised access to candidates by password
- Each candidate was allocated a number of ‘help credits’ for each module which they could trade for 1:1 email and telephone assistance
- On line test papers and written submissions at the conclusion of each DMAIC module were submitted by the candidate to a named contact
- Test marks and detailed individual feedback was given to each candidate by email and / or pre arranged phone call
Result
- Candidates were able to learn at their own pace and in their own time (within reasonable limits)
- Candidate satisfaction with the distance learning method was scored at 89% overall
- The six sigma programme continues to flourish and pace of project delivery has improved as a result of the knowledge and understanding that distance learning course brought to the business.
