Wrong customer records reduced by over 98%

Background

The process for recruiting new home shopping customers using national field sales teams was paper driven. Commercial postal and courier services were used to deliver new customer sign up forms to a central office where a manual keying operation migrated data onto a fulfilment system. Time taken from customer sign up to catalogue delivery was between 10 – 12 days which seriously depressed first order rates and mis-keying due to illegible hand writing rendered over 10% of work un-processed.

Action

  • Hand held data collection terminals using real time GPS communications technology were procured for sales teams
  • Bespoke software was written for the devices which collected required client data for direct transmission to the central fulfilment system
  • Full training and staged solution rollout across the UK
  • Result

  • Catalogue delivery cycle time reduced from 12 to 3 days
  • First order rates increased by over 12%
  • Wrong customer records reduced by over 98%
  • Postal and courier contracts cancelled saving over £850k / year
  • Central office staff requirement reduced saving £96k / year
